Friday Aug 11, 2023

What do we mean by a "wellbeing economy"? Is it more important to focus on a range of measures including health, happiness and the environment as well as economic growth? Are Scots ready for this new approach?
Economist and Chief Executive of Business for Scotland Gordon MacIntyre-Kemp gave a presentation on the wellbeing economy. He shared the effect this discussion can have on polling including support for Scottish independence.
This presentation comes from the AGM of the campaign group Yes for EU. We are grateful to the Yes for EU for sharing the audio with us.

Freeports: Who Benefits?
Tuesday Jul 25, 2023
Tuesday Jul 25, 2023
We first looked at Freeports, and the Scottish Green Freeport idea, in an earlier episode of Scottish Independence Podcasts (link below).
Since then, we have been following developments with interest and we are delighted to have had the chance to chat to an acknowledged expert in the field of Customs Law Enforcement, retired customs officer Peter Henderson.
Peter was the creator of the "six requirements" or tests, which SNP conference overwhelmingly adopted as a safeguard against the risks posed by Freeports.
In this episode, Peter explains the thinking behind the tests and shares some of his vast store of experience from his 40 years in the field.

This week's podcast episode is a double bill from our environmental justice show Rising Clyde.
In the first half of the show, host Iain Bruce interviews some of the activists protesting outside of Queen Elizabeth House in Edinburgh about the Uk government's Net Zero strategy, which they describe as "not zero, not new".
In the second half Iain chats to guests Ails Raeburn from Community Land Scotland and Alan McCoombes from the John Muir Trust about the challenges, history and future direction for Scottish Land Reform.

Discovering our history - Loudoun Hill
Friday Jul 14, 2023
Friday Jul 14, 2023
Many Scots of a certain age complain of how little of our own history we were taught in school.
In this episode we discover the Battle of Loudoun Hill, which took place in 1307 and was decisively won by Robert the Bruce. What is particularly interesting about this battle is Bruce's use of the landscape as part of his battle strategy, a tactic which also proved decisive in the later Battle of Bannockburn. Was Loudoun Hill a practice run? And how come William Wallace's name appears on the map of the battleground when he had been killed two years before?
Find out all about it with the help of our guests, Random Scottish History's Jenny Eeles and our roving reporters Neil Haston and Lynne Dougan who attended the anniversary celebrations at Loudoun Hill last month.
See more information and a plan of the battle here
